In view of indefinite strike call given by agitating safai karamcharis in Haryana, the Chief Secretary, DS Dhesi on Friday directed senior officers in the districts to ensure cleanliness in cities by working in close coordination with one another.

He issued these directions while presiding over a meeting with Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Municipal Corporations, at a video-conference, here.

Dhesi said officers should not take any action in haste which may make things worse. The state government has accepted main demands of the striking safai karamcharis. Such arrangements should be made for the disposal of waste as to ensure that there is no pile of waste left causing fear of outbreak of any disease. ‘Choona’ should be put on the waste and fogging should be done as per requirement, said he.

Appreciating the role played by non-government organisations (NGOs), he said these and self-help groups had given a great message by helping the administration in cleaning the cities.

Night sweeping should be continued and assistance of the police can be sought as and when required, said Dhesi.

He told the officers not to leave their headquarters. Special attention should be paid to maintaining law and order, and safety of VIPs should be ensured. The situation related to cleanliness in the state is fairly under control, he said.

There were reports of scuffle between police and safai karamcharis at few places in the state after the agitating employees stopped others from undertaking cleaning process.

A day before, the safai karamcharis in the state had announced to go on an indefinite strike to press for their demands of regularisation of contractual employee, equal pay for equal work among others.  Around 30000 municipal workers including safai karamcharis have been protesting since last Wednesday across the state.
