Traffic violations high in Irumbuliyur

To avoid taking a detour of two kilometres and then a U-turn, motorists and cyclists passing through the Irumbuliyur section of Grand Southern Trunk Road indulge in lane violations.

Motorists from East and West Tambaram proceeding towards Mullai Street, Abhirami Nagar and Bharathiyar Street, Irumbuliyur, have to take a U-turn at the Peerkankaranai traffic signal, opposite Peerkankarnai lake.

By speeding, motorists from Irumbuliyur and Peerkankaranai add to the traffic problem on this section.

Pedestrians are most at risk from these motorists, as they can’t use the footpaths.

“The footpaths are constructed at a such a height that we find it difficult to climb on to them. Moreover, the pavements are used for illegal parking. The space abutting the pavements is occupied by company buses,”says S. Vijay, a resident of Irumbuliyur.

Additionally, the Highway lacks illumination for a nearly a kilometre, till the approach area to the GST Road service lane, where motorists swerve right, increasing the risk of collision with motorists coming from Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur.

Even the lights emitted by the commercial establishments on the stretch fail to provide sufficient illumination.
