Royal wedding: Prince Charles will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle

At her wedding to Prince Harry tomorrow, Meghan Markle will be walked down the aisle by the groom's father, Prince Charles.

Kensington Palace confirmed the news on Friday following speculation Ms Markle's mother would take responsibility, after her own father pulled out of attending the wedding.

In a statement released Friday, the palace said Ms Markle had requested Prince Charles accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St George's Chapel at the wedding on Saturday.

"The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to The Royal Family in this way," the statement said.

On Thursday, Ms Markle confirmed her father Thomas Markle would not be attending the wedding, due to illness.

In a statement issued by Ms Markle via Kensington Palace, the American actor said "I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health."

It followed tabloid uproar over revelations Thomas Markle had staged photographs with a paparazzo, showing him preparing for the wedding.

Less than a week before the big day, reports on the US gossip site TMZ stated the scandal had prompted Mr Markle to pull out of the wedding, "because he doesn’t want to embarrass the royal family or his daughter".

Kensington Palace released a statement asking the public for understanding.

"This is a deeply personal moment for Ms Markle in the days before her wedding. She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr Markle in this difficult situation."

More to come.
