May 16 meeting

KEY ACTION Entered into a contract with Brian Builders LLC for the concrete and drain work at the bleachers at the football stadium at a cost of $35,800. A resolution was also approved to allow the concrete and drain work to be completed.

DISCUSSION: Superintendent Cindy Brown said a safe route to school grant meeting was held May 10. The next step is to visit the sites where new sidewalks can be installed and photos can be taken and advice given from the grant experts. The next meeting will be held at 9 a.m. June 4 at the school.

OTHER ACTION

* Approved a three-year contract to Adam Hall, middle school/high school principal.

* Granted one certified (teaching) contact, five two-year certified contracts, two three-year contracts and four five-year contracts.

* Granted a one-year classified contract to two employees, three-three-year classified contracts and one- five-year classified contract.

* Granted a one-year supplemental contract to Hall as boys' varsity basketball coach and Patrick Mitchell, girls' varsity basketball coach. Mitchell was hired by a 3-2 vote.

* Held the first reading of 17 board policies.

* Inquired if an activity fund could be set up to help pay for some of the extra events held in the elementary. The cost for extra events cost about $3,000 this past year.

* Approved the five-year forecast which must be submitted to the state by May 31.

* Entered a joint agreement appointing the Business Advisory Council of the Stark County Educational Service Center to serve as the BAC for the district. Thereby board is not required to appoint a BAC pursuant.

* Accepted a $1,200 donation toward the purchase of Chrome carts for the elementary.

* Approved a list of 2018 graduates pending successful completion of all graduation requirements.

* Non-renewed all supplemental contracts for 2017-18 except for those still in progress.

* Gave approval for the student accident insurance from Griffin Insurance for the 2018-19 school year.

* Renewed an agreement between the district and the county health department for services of a registered school nurse. The new contract will be for 30-hours per week for 39-weeks at a cost of $27,000.

* Accepted the resignations of Kathleen Scott, high school math teacher, Courtney Pollock, Title I teacher and Kevin Pollock, kindergarten to 12th grade physical education teacher.

* Granted a one-year contract to Hope Haney as kindergarten through 12-grade art teacher.

* Reviewed logos for the Strasburg Digital Academy designed by Denny Trimmer.

* Recognized April students of the month Stephen Slone, high school and Jordan Mitchell, middle school. Slone has portrayed the Tiger mascot this school year.

* Dan Bolen, band director, gave an update on progress of the purchase of new band uniforms and the band members continue to work hard.

* The elementary staff will hold a two-week kick start for students in August prior to the first day of school.

* Over 500 attended the Muffins with Mom held on May 14.

* Donations can be made to the elementary principal’s fund to help defray the cost of special events.

* Thanked the parent teacher group for all their help with events at the elementary school.

* An elementary fun day will be held May 25 and awards day will be held May 30.

* The fifth-grade graduation will be held at 1:30 p.m. May 31.

* Strasburg Schools was named Partner of the Year with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and senior Olivia Martin was selected as participating in Big Brothers/ Big Sisters for the longest period of years.

* Middle school awards will be held at 8 a.m. May 21 and high school awards will be distributed at 7 p.m. May 21.

* High School graduation will be held at 2 p.m. May 27 in the high school gym.

* During Pay It Forward day 112 students volunteered to help in the community. A cookout was held at school after the work was completed. Students earn community service hours toward graduation.

* A special board meeting will be held at 7 a.m. June 21 in in the superintendent’s office for year end business.
