MANGALURU: The
Mangaluru City police has booked a
suo moto case against hatemongers who circulated misleading
church attack videos after poll results.
City police commissioner
Vipul Kumar warned that those trying to disturb
communal harmony will be dealt with iron hands. “We have booked a case under IPC sections 153A, 507 and 502. This is a step taken to ensure that such miscreants are kept under control, and don’t spark any communal tension. We are investigating this issue.”
Hours after the BJP won 7 out of 8 seats in Dakshina Kannada district, and all five seats in Udupi district, a series of old videos and images claiming that some churches in
Mangaluru region have been attacked by right-wingers went viral on social media. Social media posts claimed that BJP and Sangh Parivar activists attacked
St Lawrence Church in Bondel, which was close to a counting centre, on Tuesday. The post said during the victory celebration of the party, party workers tried to plant BJP flags near a crucifix.
However, in reality, no such incidents have taken place till date, after May 15, and such posts are fake. The videos circulated are almost 10-years-old. The attacks shown in the videos took place in 2008.
