CHENNAI: The
Supreme Court is to deliver its judgment in the gutka case on Friday, the last day before the court goes into a six-week summer recess. A division bench of Justice
Rohinton Fali Nariman and
Justice AM Khanwilkar will deliver the verdict at10.30am, according to a cause list issued by the apex court registry on Thursday evening.
On April 26, the Madras high court’s first bench headed by Chief Justice
Indira Banerjee ordered a CBI probe into the issue after DMK filed a PIL. It all started on July 8, 2017, when the income tax department raided the godown, offices and residences of a pan masala and gutka manufacturer in Tamil Nadu, who was facing charges of evading tax to the tune of ?250 crore. During the raid, diary entries of bribe paid to several officers and politicians were recovered and now form the basis for the case.
