Three revolutionary crepe myrtles chosen by plant hunter Lark Hanham
This new black-leaved crepe myrtles range exploded in the US last year, featuring a unique range of attention-grabbing specimens. They are ideal for planting in well-drained soil in a pot and, situated in a sunny location or at the back of a border, their arrestingly dark leaves will provide a striking backdrop. Their deciduous foliage also colours brilliantly in autumn; prune them into a tree or multi-stemmed shrub so you can watch the interesting bark peel. They require little maintenance other than a light prune in July and a multi-purpose feed in summer. This new range is mildew resistant and very drought tolerant. Hardy to -5°C. Keep frost free.
indica Pure White™
Making one of the boldest statements of the collection, Pure White™ features flawless near-black foliage, which emerges in early spring and provides all-year-round ornamental value. In July its beauty is accentuated by masses of diamond-white striking blooms, which last through summer until the first frosts. Height 3m and spread 2.5m.
indica Red Hot™
Red Hot is a very saucy variety, which makes a spectacular flowering hedge. Its glossy black foliage is the perfect accompaniment to the arresting deep-red, ruffled flowers and its blooms have a light by pleasing scent. In autumn, before the leaves drop, they turn butter-yellow. Height 3m and spread 2.5m.
indica Purely Purple™
This stunning new addition has gorgeous black foliage, which becomes smothered in clusters of frizzy purple flowers from late July to September. It is apparently hardier than the other varieties, tolerating -15°C, and its habit is erect, meaning it’s ideal for smaller gardens. Height 2m and spread 1.5m.
