Only two secondary in the poorest parts of Scotland offer their pupils a wide choice of Advanced Highers, Ruth Davidson has said as she called for parliamentary inquiry into the “dwindling” number of subjects on offer.
The Scottish Tory leader said youngsters in the wealthiest communities have a 70 per cent chance of being able to choose from at least a dozen Advanced Highers, the gold standard exam for university entry.
But she said the “reality in SNP Scotland” was that schools in deprived areas “get nowhere near that”, with the exception of two, and accused the First Minister of “curtailing” the ability of pupils to get a broad education.
