MVD drive nets over ₹5 lakh

A drive by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) in the district on Wednesday netted ₹5.90 lakh in terms of fine towards, while action was initiated against 1,112 vehicle owners on various charges.

MVD officials from Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki districts participated in the drive led by K.M. Shaji, Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement).

As many as 37 motorists were booked for driving without licence; 42 for not wearing helmet; 14 for using air horn; 22 for non-payment of taxes, and 16 two-wheeler riders for fitting vehicles with excessively noisy silencers. Five tipper lorries were booked for overloading; six private buses for operating without door shutters, while 25 motorists were charged for rash and negligent driving.

Officials in multiple squads conducted checks at various parts in the districts. Mr. Shaji warned of strict enforcement drive in the days to come as part of efforts to bring down accidents.
