The Main Cafe in Alma is continuing work toward an eventual opening.

“What’s held us up is our mechanical inspection,” said Canyon Platt, co-owner of the restaurant at 117 E. Superior Street. “It was a lot more than we envisioned when we started the project.”

An announcement Tuesday on Facebook indicated the restaurant will not be open by the time of the annual Highland Festival and Games that starts May 25.

“Nobody is more disappointed than we are,” the post read. “We are still here and we are still working - every day! We had a major setback with a contractor back in February that put a halt on all of our progress for nearly two months.”

It plans to open as quickly as it possibly can, Platt said. He and a few other family members have worked on the construction.

“It’s hard to gauge,” he said. “As quickly as possible is the best answer I can really give.”

Work to renovate the space has been going on for more than a year.
