New Delhi : The Congress on Thursday gave a call for protests across the country on Friday to “save democracy” in the light of the blatant murder of democracy in Karnataka to install a minority BJP government.
Party communication chief Randeep Singh Surjewala told a Press conference here that there will be demonstrations by the party workers on Friday in all state and district headquarters.
He regretted that Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala acted at the instance of the Modi government to block installation of a majority government of the Congress and Janata Dal(S) combine. He hoped that the Supreme Court will order floor test by BJP Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Monday to show he does not command the majority in the Assembly.
In a circular to all state units, AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot asked all PCC presidents and senior leaders to lead delegations to the Governors and submit memorandum, urging the President of India to safeguard democratic principles and the sanctity of the Constitution.
He said the protests at state and district headquarters should be in the form of “dharnas” on Friday. He also asked partymen to reach out to all other democratic forces and civil society to seek their support to this cause.
SINGHVI’S COMMENTS: Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and senior advocate had all kudos for the Apex Court hearing him at the dead of the night on the Karnataka development.
In a series of tweets, he said: “Irrespective of merits, SC finds sufficient urgency to list at 1.45 am. Shows system works irrespective if merits in getting larger wheels to move at a very short notice without regards to technicalities.
“SC deserves immeasurable kudos 4 sitting 3+half hrs from 2 am. Patient hearing par excellence. Though no stay, Bench made swearing fully subject to further orders.
“In a sense, BSY’s oath is provisional. SC can change interim order tomorrow after seeing documents. Preponement of floor test also open.”
Singhvi also put a picture of a horse in the stable that reads: ‘Horse trading’ is necessary for a ‘stable government.” His tweet says: “Hope it is not anyone’s motto? Or maybe it is…currently for one party.”
