The BJP legislative party leader B S Yeddyurappa was sworn in as the 24th Chief Minister of Karnataka today. Governor Vaju Bhai Vala administered the oath of office to him. He took oath in the name of God and farmers.
Senior BJP leaders Ananth Kumar, Prakash Javdekar, Dharmendra Pradhan, J P Nadda and all the newly elected MLAs of BJP were present on the occasion.
Addressing media persons after assuming office, Yeddyurappa said MLAs who respect people’s mandate will vote for him during the floor test and said he seeks conscience vote of all the members of the Assembly.
On fulfilling the promise of waiving loans of up to one lakh of all the farmers and weavers, he said Chief Secretary has sought time till tomorrow to collate the information on the loan amount that needs to be waived off and once the information is provided, he said, he will take a decision on the waiver.
Saying that the issue of Government formation is in Supreme Court and hence he said, he cannot elaborate further on how he seeks to garner necessary numbers.
On the other side, the Janata Dal (Secular) State President H D Kumaraswamy has made an appeal to the leaders of various non-BJP political parties including Mamata Banerjee and Mayawati to register their protest against BJP attempts to form Government in Karnataka.
Speaking to media persons in Bengaluru today, he said that the Modi Government is using threats and other means to force Congress and JD(S) MLAs to defect to their side. He expressed objection to the 15 days given by the Governor to BJP to prove majority. He later joined the Congress leaders in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue to be part of the protest.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of protest, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Supreme Court has asked BJP to submit list of MLAs supporting them and the legal fight will be continued by the Congress. He blamed BJP for usurping power even when in minority.
Early this morning, the Supreme Court refused to stay the swearing-in of BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa as Chief Minister of Karnataka. A 3-judge bench said, swearing-in and government formation will be subject to the outcome of the petition before it and posted the case for further hearing for tomorrow.
The bench, headed by Justice A.K. Sikri, also sought the letter Yeddyurappa wrote to the Governor yesterday, informing him about being elected as the BJP legislature party leader.
The apex court said, it will also hear other respondents like BJP. The court also issued a notice to respondents including BJP and asked them to file their replies.
The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed Congress and JD(S) seeking to stay the swearing-in ceremony of Mr Yeddyurappa.
BJP President Amit Shah has congratulated BS Yeddyurappa for being sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
In a tweet, Mr Shah said this is the victory of every Kannadiga who voted to uproot the corrupt and divisive politics of Congress. He expressed confidence that the new government under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will fulfil the aspirations of the people.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore also extended his greetings to Mr Yeddyurappa.
In a tweet, he said the state will tread on a new path of development, growth, progress and prosperity under the leadership of the new Chief Minister.
