West Bengal Panchayat Election Result 2018 Live: Trinamool Set for Big Win; Opposition Yet to Open Account in Zila Parishads

West Bengal panchayat election: There are reports of attacks on opposition party candidates and counting agents as the counting is underway for the West Bengal gram panchayat elections. Candidates and agents have been allegedly forced to leave several counting centres. Two people were shot at in North Dinajpur allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers and several vehicles were ransacked. BJP, CPM, Congress worker gathered in front of DM office to protest. According to results available for 439/3254 gram panchayats (includes uncontested wins) around 11.30am, the TMC won 404, BJP 20, Congress 6, Left Front 2 and others 7. The polls were marred by widespread violence leaving at least 20 people dead and over 70 injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attacked the Mamata Banerjee government over the violence in the panchayat polls and called it "murder of democracy". The Trinamool responded by saying that the PM Modi had an "outburst of frustration". The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking to make inroads in this crucial elections before the 2019 general elections.
The Trinamool Congress reinforced its dominant position in rural West Bengal's local bodies, bagging 9,270 seats in gram panchayats, while the BJP emerged as the main challenger to the ruling party in most districts, according to results available till 2 pm today. State Election Commission (SEC) sources said the TMC was also ahead in 2,317 gram panchayat seats for which counting is in progress, reports PTI.

Tension arose at a counting centre at Mekhligunj in Cooch Behar district. Police fire tear gas shells to bring situation under control. Further, at Domjur in Howrah district, it was reported that people tried to rob ballot papers. TMC agents allegedly tried to appropriate and rip ballot papers, as a result of which police resorted to lathicharge.

The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) wins Ranigunj Panchayat Samiti in Paschim Burdwan district in the West Bengal panchayat election 2018. Interestingly, Ranigunj falls under BJP's Babul Supriyo's Lok Sabha constituency. While in neighbouring district Purulia, tension surfaced outside counting centre in Kashipur where opposition party candidiates were allegedly trashed.

In an interesting turn of events, TMC wins Kanksha Gram Panchayat, after a gap of 40 years. On the other hand, in Maldarpur in Birbhum district, police have lathicharged on All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters, during counting of votes for the West Bengal panchayat election 2018.

At Santhia in Birbhum district, crude bombs have been recovered. Meanwhile, in Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur district, bombs were hurled at the BDO office. Incidents of violence between Congress and TMC workers have also been reported in Baishnabnagar, Malda district amid counting of votes in West Bengal panchayat election 2018.

At the same time, allegations have come up against the All India Trinamool Congress of false voting in some empty ballot boxes in Majhdia in Nadia district, in the presence of the police.

CPI(ML) Red Star K N Ramachandran said, "at Bhangar, in Polarhat II Gram Panchayat in five out of 16 seats, where the West Bengal panchayat elections took place, the Bhangar Committee candidates won with overwhelming majority. Supreme Court has stayed the results of 8 seats where the TMC candidates are unopposed as the Committee candidates were prevented from giving nomination and in the 3 seats where booths where captured by TMC goons we demand re-polling. In West Bengal Panchayat election counting, results available for 656/3254 gram panchayats of the state till 12 a.m. (including the uncontested wins) show TMC won 576, BJP 47, Congress at 8, Left Front 6 and others at 19.

A Congress supporter is injured in clashes with the All India Trinamool Congress workers in Chopra, North Dinajpur district during the counting of votes for the West Bengal panchayat election 2018, where the victim was allegedly attacked by a sharp object. The police, however, have not confirmed the incident. Besides, in counting centre number 164- Gaighata in North 24 Parganas district, tension emerges after BJP's lead and allegations have surfaced against TMC supporters of snatching ballot boxes. Further, counting centres are being ransacked in Krishnagunj in Nadia district. Counting has been stalled for the moment.

The opposition has claimed that counting of votes for West Bengal panchayat election 2018 has not been fair in Purbasthali Block-II as ballot papers were found to be wet, feeding into suspicion on ballot paper tampering. Moreover, the opposition has protested against the absence of their party members or agents in the counting centers for Gram Panchayat seats.

Congress alleges that a supporter has been shot dead by TMC sheltered criminals in Chopra, South Dinajpur, in clashes outside a counting centre. Police have denied of any such event saying no such incident has taken place. Congress supporters have blocked NH-31 in protest.
