IGCSE results: Students of Mumbai schools perform better than last year

Results for the Class 10 equivalent International General Certificate of Secondary education (IGCSE) and Class 11 and 12 equivalent AS and A level exams held in March 2018 were announced yesterday.

Performance of students in IGCSE examination was better than last year. According to schools, results of even AS and A levels was better this year as compared to last year’s.

At Jamnabai Narsee School, out of 58 students who appeared for IGCSE exams, 14 scored above 90%. Three students even scored 100% in Mathematics.

Similarly, out of 149 students who sat for IGCSE exams in Utpal Sanghvi Global School, 34 scored above 90% – a 5% rise compared to last year. Two students scored 100% in Mathematics. The average marks scored by students at the school also went up from 79.81% to 80.27%.

“Our students have done very well this year – the top score in our school is 96.25% as compared to last year, which was 96.17%,” said Monika Koradia, principal, Garodia International Centre for Learning, Ghatkopar.

Close to 11.27% students of Prabhavati Padamshi Soni International Junior College have scored 90% and above in AS and A Levels examination.

The examination body, Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), recorded a 13% growth in the applicants for IGCSE and AS & A Level examinations, with 38,000 students appearing for the test. Last year, 34,000 students took the exam.

“Entries for Cambridge IGCSE grew by 12% on March 2017, with more than 30,000 entries. Entries for Cambridge International AS & A Level increased by 16% last year with more than 8,000 entries,” read the official statement released by CIE.

“It feels great to see the popularity of a cross-curricular subject like Global Perspectives that nurtures critical thinking, research and collaboration skills through the study of global issues,” said Ruchira Ghosh, Regional Director, South Asia, Cambridge International.

Global Perspectives is a research-based subject where students can express their views and also understand the views of peers, nationally and globally.

Starting from this year, Cambridge International added three more subject options to the March 2018 exams: Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design and Cambridge International AS & A Levels in Psychology and Global Perspectives and Research. Students will have more options in 2019. Applicants can also choose to take CIE in June and November.

In 2018, Global Perspectives saw the highest growth in entries at IGCSE with a 79% rise on last year. Computer Science was the second most popular subject with a 52% rise on last year. These drastic changes could be credited to

At Cambridge International AS & A Level, Information Technology entries increased by 153% from March 2016. Accounting entries too increased with a 24 % growth recorded since March 2016.STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects remain most popular among students.
