Students who have been participating in complimentary dance classes offered by a local grassroots organization will get the opportunity to showcase what they have learned.

Ground Zero Elevated, a faith-based organization formed to give Lake County youths a positive outlet, is hosting an event called a “A Night of Praise” at 6 p.m. May 19. The event will be at Harvey High School in Painesville and is intended to bring the community together and help Project Hope for the Homeless. It is free and open to the public.

There will be several performances and guest speakers.

“We especially want to work with the at-risk youth and have them do something more positive,” said Zakiya Jackson-Boyd, who was instrumental in the development of the organization. “We want them to express their skills, their talents and their energy to something positive.”

Ground Zero Elevated CEO Karyn Gant said it is all about giving back to the community.

The group has been collecting donations for Project Hope for the Homeless, which is based in Painesville Township, for the past few months. The collection drive will continue at the event and Project Hope’s community outreach coordinator is scheduled to speak, Jackson-Boyd said.

Some of the items that attendees are asked to bring are individually bottled water, sugar in bulk, assorted tea bags, hot cocoa, coffee creamer, size 5 diapers, baby wipes, diaper ointment, sunscreen, flip flops, and girls/ boys underwear and socks.

While Painesville Schools is providing the venue, the district is not sponsoring or endorsing the event.
