DAYTONA BEACH — A motorist crashing his pickup into another vehicle, a power pole, a fence and a barber shop as he tried to speed away from police, authorities said.

Daytona Beach police officers said they were able to arrest the suspect moments after the Tuesday crash because his pants fell to his ankles while he was running away.

The motorist whose vehicle was smashed during the chase was transported to a local hospital, police said.

Tobias Smith, 24, was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage and one count each of fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash with injury, driving with a suspended license, driving an unregistered vehicle and resisting arrest without violence. He was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail and held without bail.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, police observed Smith making a right turn into the parking lot of 980 W. International Speedway Blvd. in an attempt to avoid a red traffic signal, so a traffic stop was attempted, according to an arrest report.

Smith turned north on North Nova Road and continued driving in spite of pursuing police, the report stated.

The suspect turned right onto Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard from the center lane and picked up speed, eventually running a red light without slowing down, police said.

Smith was traveling up to 60 mph in a 25 mph zone in his Ford pickup when he struck a vehicle driven by Jarrett Hymon, 34, and spun out, according to the report.

Smith's vehicle then struck a Florida Power & Light pole, a fence and a building at 919 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. that houses Nu-Looks Barber Shop with customers were inside at the time, police said.

A female passenger got out of Smith's vehicle, but didn't flee, the report stated. Smith started running east, but fell to the ground as his pants fell to his ankles, police said.

The report stated that no one inside the barber shop was injured, but the crash caused $3,000 in damage to the building. When paramedics got to Hyman, he was shaking, had watery eyes and complained of a sore chest, police said. His car has $10,000 in damage, according to the report.
