Forecasters are calling for a cool and rainy Wednesday.

Showers are expected throughout the day following a round of thunderstorms which moved into the region overnight, according to the National Weather Service. There's a chance more thunderstorms will materialize in southern areas of the region.

Regional temperatures could be 15-20 degrees cooler than they were Tuesday, which carried hot and humid weather. Highs region-wide will range between the 60s and the 70s, according to NWS, with higher temperatures in the Delmarva Peninsula.

The cold front that moved through the region Tuesday will be nearly stationary over the Mid-Atlantic, according to NWS. This front will stall between two areas of high pressure.

Showers could continue through the evening as one of several waves of low pressure pass through the region, according to NWS. This could cause some locally-heavy showers, especially on the peninsula and across southern New Jersey, said NWS.

Less than an inch of rain is expected to fall in the evening hours, NWS said.

Thursday's weather is expected to mirror the cool, rainy Wednesday experience, according to NWS. Thunderstorms remain possible throughout Thursday.

But the heaviest rains of the week are expected to fall Friday, according to NWS.

A prolonged period of unsettled weather remains in place into the start of the weekend, and then several cold fronts will pass through the region through the start of the new week. T

he stationary front remains along the Mid-Atlantic Thursday, and begins to lift north as a warm front on Friday, but will not be through the region until at least Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the region remains in between two different area of high pressure: One over the Northeast U.S. that will not depart until Saturday, and the other over the western Atlantic, centered around Bermuda.

Meanwhile, a weak sub-tropical low over the eastern Gulf of Mexico will slowly lift north through the end of the week, and will interact with the stationary front as it lifts through the region Friday through Saturday.

Showers will taper off Saturday afternoon when a warm front north of the region finally lifts, according to NWS. Between today and Saturday, NWS expects 2-5 inches of rain.

A cold front is expected to move through the region on Sunday, and this might bring the showers back, NWS said. Another cold front may pass through early next week.
