Instagram to warn users if they spend too much time on the app

The feature was unearthed by Jane Manchun Wong, a computer scientist known for discovering upcoming features on apps that are hidden in their programme code.

Instagram is developing a new feature to show users just how long they spend on the app, its chief executive has confirmed. 

The move by the photo-sharing site, headed up by Kevin Systrom, is part of a wider effort from technology companies to get people off their phones.

The "Usage insights" feature is expected to show the time a user spends on Instagram each day as well as their overall usage across an extended period. 

Systrom admitted that the time people are spending online may be having a negative effect on individuals, and it was down to companies like Instagram to respond to the issue.
