Rymfire Elementary School raised $1,503.23 this year for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), the lion’s share due to the efforts of one student, Diego Costa.
Diego sought donations online and wrote to family and friends, ultimately raising $1,000 by himself. His efforts earned him an award plaque presented by Megan Then of LLS for “Outstanding Achievement in Fundraising.”
Teacher Caryn Burris’s sixth-grade students raised the most funds as a class and won a pasta party courtesy of Olive Garden, which is the national sponsor for the LLS Student Series.
Competition promotes reading
Rymfire Elementary School held its third annual Battle of the Books on May 10 in the school’s media center.
The competition, conducted by media specialist Melanie Tahan, was for students in grades three through five and was based on the Sunshine State Young Readers Award program.
The Young Readers Award is a statewide motivational reading program by the Florida Association of Media in Education and the state Department of Education. Its goal is to encourage students to read a variety of books independently.
In the Rymfire contest, the winners were Lorenzien Wright, first place; Marc Volkov, second place; and Andrew Jones and Daniel Volkov tied for third place. The contest is presented in a game-show style format and tests contestants’ knowledge of the books they read.
Winners received gift cards and everyone was invited to a pizza-and-dessert lunch party.
Students had to read a minimum number of books to participate. Qualifiers could then vote along with other students around the state to decide the top place books.
