Green is the word during Ramzan

Muslim bodies in Kollam to follow eco-friendly measures

As Ramzan begins on Thursday, fasting and other rituals will strictly adhere to the green protocol in the district. Various Muslim organisations in Kollam have expressed their willingness to follow different environment-friendly measures during the holy month at a meeting convened by the district administration.

Members of the community will be introduced to the green protocol guidelines by organisations and religious leaders.

They will ensure its enforcement in mosques and educational institutions. They will spread awareness of the protocol in households so that it can be followed even after Ramzan.

“All Jamaats have been instructed to follow the green protocol and completely avoid disposable material during all Iftar functions,” said Nujumudeen Ahamed, secretary, Kerala Muslim Jamaat Council.

Since Iftar parties and get-together normally depend on plastic, styrofoam and other disposable food packaging, it has been instructed to stay off everything non-biodegradable and go for reusable alternatives.

“Mosques will provide reusable steel and clay plates and glasses while breaking fast in the evening. Even persons who sponsor food have been asked to avoid plastic containers and wrappings,” he said.

‘No’ to plastics

Plastic will be completely avoided, be it for flex boards, banners or other ornamental purposes. Instead, environment-friendly material including cloth, jute and foliage will be used.

“We have already sent letters to 58 Jamaats in Kollam appealing them to follow the protocol and make their holy month observance environment-friendly,” added Mr. Nujumudeen.
