BS Yeddyurappa will be sworn in as the new Karnataka CM at 9.30am on Thursday with Karnataka Governor Valubhai Vala inviting the BJP to form the government first, ahead of the other claimant - the JDS-Congress combine. The governor has given the BJP 10 days to prove it has a majority in a floor test. The governor took the decision after consulting with former Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi, who favoured inviting the single largest party first, in this case the BJP. The JDS and Congress had met the governor at the Raj Bhavan in the evening when Vala had assured he will consult legal experts and consider the precedents of Goa and Manipur. The JDS-Congress combine has 117 MLAs, well clear of the magic mark. The Congress is expected to address a press conference soon. The party has previously said that it would move the Supreme Court if denied the chance to form the government first.

Stay tuned for LIVE updates on Karnataka government formation:

Karnataka Election Results LIVE: Yeddyurappa to Take Oath Tomorrow, Congress Says Murder of Democracy
Seen here is BJP CM candidate BS Yeddyurappa.

Government formation in Karnataka is a tricky affair now with the Karnataka Assembly election results 2018 throwing up a hung Assembly, giving 104 seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 78 seats to the Congress and 37 seats to the JD(S). The Congress has dramatically backed the JD(S) for chief ministership and both parties are likely to parade their MLAs before Governor Vajubhai Vala today morning.

The controversial mining-scam accused Reddy Brothers are back in the thick of political action in the Karnataka cliff-hanger. The BJP high-command has reportedly asked them to mobilise MLAs in view of the possibility of a trust vote in the Karnataka Assembly.

Congress MLA from Kushtagi Amaregouda Linganagouda Patil Bayyapur alleges that he was offered a ministry by the BJP in lieu of support and claims to have rejected the offer.

The BJP, too, has staked claim to form the Karnataka government, but is seven seats short of the majority mark in the 222 seats that went to the polls. Elections to two more seats are yet to bea held as polling for RR Nagar seat was deferred on account of alleged electoral malpractices while it was countermanded in Jayanagar seat following the death of the BJP candidate.

Addressing BJP workers in Delhi on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who undertook a vigorous campaign, hailed the party's win in Karnataka as "unparalleled and unprecedented". The BJP bagged 104 seats, a gain of 64 , while the Congress notched 78, a loss of 44 seats, though its vote share was nearly two percentage points more than the saffron party.

The JD(S) secured 37 seats, down by three from its previous tally. In a roller-coaster ride for BJP, it initially appeared that the party was set to return to power after a five-year hiatus with a resounding majority. But at the end of counting of votes it came tantalisingly close to 113 needed to form the government.

"We had to be ready for any eventuality. So when there was a window, we chipped in," Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told India Today TV. "...when the JD(S) and the Congress numbers swelled up, that was the time we felt we can make it."
