The contributions of hundreds of thousands of Virginians during World War I is the focus of a program Sweet Briar College professor Lynn Rainville is set to present May 20 at the Amherst County Museum and Historical Society.

The 2:30 p.m. program “Virginians in the Great War: At Home and Abroad” is free and open to the public in the Hamble Center, located directly behind the museum at 154 South Main St. in Amherst.

Rainville, associate dean of academic affairs and director of the Tusculum Institute at Sweet Briar College, will touch on the war effort a century ago that included drafted soldiers, locally born horses, female stenographers, African-American doctors, domestic gardeners, National Guard troops and army chaplains, according to the museum.

She authored the book “Virginia and the Great War: Mobilization, Supply and Combat, 1914-1919.” Light refreshments will be served during the event.
