The JDS and Congress met Karnataka governor Valubhai Vala at the Raj Bhavan and handed over a letter confirming their post poll alliance. Karnataka Congress chief G Parameshwara says that the Governor told them he will consult legal experts before making a decision on which side - JDS-Congress or the BJP - to invite first to prove their majority. The Congress and JDS also took their MLAs to the Governor's House in a show of strength. The Congress is now likely to move its MLAs to a resort in Bengaluru, and the BJP may follow suit as both sides try to keep their flock together before a crucial floor test. Meanwhile, accusations and allegations continue to fly from both sides. Senior BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje accused the Congress of tapping the phones of its leaders. HD Kumaraswamy, on the other hand, has accused the BJP of offering Rs 100 crore and cabinet posts to some Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs today to lure them. Earlier, BS Yeddyurappa submitted the papers of his election as BJP Legislature Party leader to Governor Vala and said the latter has promised to take “appropriate decision”. The Congress has readied plans to “secure” the newly elected lawmakers at resorts. All eyes are on who the Karnataka Governor will invite to form the government in the southern state.

A History of Hung Assemblies | Like the Karnataka election, a number of assembly polls in the last few years threw up a fractured mandate and the BJP invariably emerged as the party which- either leading an alliance or being a junior partner- was given the first opportunity by respective governors to form government. In states like Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya, the Congress won the largest number of seats and also staked claim before the respective governor to form government but the BJP managed to secure a majority there with post-poll alliances and their leaders were sworn in as chief ministers.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today slammed outgoing Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of encouraging horse-trading in the state, saying the Congress should understand that the mandate of the people is against it. Taking a dig at the Congress, he said the Karnataka elections were a no-ordinary affair as Siddaramaiah lost in one constituency and "scraped through" in the other.
Sonia and Rahul Gandhi got together to decide that these results had thrown up an opportunity to send a message to other opposition parties that Congress had the fighting spirit and that they all would have to come together to take on the BJP.

Government formation in Karnataka is a tricky affair now with the Karnataka Assembly election results 2018 throwing up a hung Assembly, giving 104 seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 78 seats to the Congress and 37 seats to the JD(S). The Congress has dramatically backed the JD(S) for chief ministership and both parties are likely to parade their MLAs before Governor Vajubhai Vala today morning.
The controversial mining-scam accused Reddy Brothers are back in the thick of political action in the Karnataka cliff-hanger. The BJP high-command has reportedly asked them to mobilise MLAs in view of the possibility of a trust vote in the Karnataka Assembly.
Congress MLA from Kushtagi Amaregouda Linganagouda Patil Bayyapur alleges that he was offered a ministry by the BJP in lieu of support and claims to have rejected the offer.
The BJP, too, has staked claim to form the Karnataka government, but is seven seats short of the majority mark in the 222 seats that went to the polls. Elections to two more seats are yet to bea held as polling for RR Nagar seat was deferred on account of alleged electoral malpractices while it was countermanded in Jayanagar seat following the death of the BJP candidate.
Addressing BJP workers in Delhi on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who undertook a vigorous campaign, hailed the party's win in Karnataka as "unparalleled and unprecedented". The BJP bagged 104 seats, a gain of 64 , while the Congress notched 78, a loss of 44 seats, though its vote share was nearly two percentage points more than the saffron party.
The JD(S) secured 37 seats, down by three from its previous tally. In a roller-coaster ride for BJP, it initially appeared that the party was set to return to power after a five-year hiatus with a resounding majority. But at the end of counting of votes it came tantalisingly close to 113 needed to form the government.
"We had to be ready for any eventuality. So when there was a window, we chipped in," Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told India Today TV. "...when the JD(S) and the Congress numbers swelled up, that was the time we felt we can make it."
