Meghan Markle's half-sister, Samantha Grant, was taken to hospital Wednesday night after a car crash following a confrontation with paparazzi, according to her boyfriend.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ  reported Ms Grant's partner, Mark said Samantha had suffered a broken ankle and fractured her knee in a car crash while the pair were driving near their home in Florida.

He told the website the incident happened near a toll booth where he says a photographer veered in front of the couple's car, leading him to swerve and hit a concrete barrier.

Samantha Grant, 53, hit the windshield and fell to the floor mat, he said.

Suffering from MS, he said Ms Grant was unable to lift herself up and that her foot was twisted backward.

The reports come as it is also reported that Thomas Markle says his heart surgery has been completed, following a heart attack earlier in the week.

It is this health issue which Meghan Markle's father says is now prohibiting him from travelling to England for his daughter's wedding, after a turbulent week of u-turns as to whether or not he would attend.

Amid intense media scrutiny, earlier in the day Ms Grant accused Kensington Palace of abandoning Mr Markle.

Ms Grant, along with her brother Thomas Markle Jr, have not been invited to the wedding and no longer has any relationship with her half-sister.
