AGRA: The indefinite “hunger” strike by the students of Aligarh Muslim University entered its fifth day on Wednesday, with the administration still not giving into the AMUSU’s demand for a judicial probe and the arrest of 17 Hindu right wing activists involved in the May 2 violence over the issue of removal of MA Jinnah’s photograph.

AMSU vice president Sajjad Subhan Rather, who has been on hunger strike for the last four days, was shifted to hospital on Wednesday as his condition had deteriorated.

The protesters, who have appealed to students across the country to join the protest, had an unusual visitor, Fathima Nafees, the mother of the missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmad, today. Fathima Naseef met the students and urged them to discontinue their hunger strike, as this “fight” will go on for a long time.

She accused the government of being “insensitive” and said that those in power are least bothered about the welfare of the students. She said, “I have been fighting for my son till date in a hope to get justice and that is what I have asked AMU students to do”.

She said that it’s unfortunate and painful that the police resorted to lathi-charge on students. “I don’t want any parents to suffer like me,” she said, adding that they are students not criminals.

Former president of students union Faizul Hassan said, “the union is considering Najeeb’s mother’s request to end the strike”.

AMSU president Mashkoor Ahmad Usmani, secretary Mohammad Fahad and former president of the students union Faizul Hasan also joined the indefinite hunger strike on Monday.

AMUSU leaders also held a meeting with senior district officials in a bid to end the two-week-long protests on the campus. But so far no consensus was arrived at.
