The bizarre story of PGA Tour pro Lucas Glover, whose wife was arrested on a domestic violence charge over the weekend, has taken yet another twist.
In a 911 call to the St. John's (Fla.) County Sheriff's Office on Saturday, Krista Glover said she was attacked by her mother-in-law before abruptly hanging up.
“I’ve been attacked by my mother in law," Krista Glover told the dispatcher. "She’s in tears and locked herself in a room. She attacked us.”
After the connection was broken, the dispatcher called back and Lucas Glover answered, trying to downplay the incident.
“I think we got our wires crossed here," he said. "This is the husband, the sane one of the bunch. My wife has called (the police) on my mom and she’s trying to blame it on my mother, which is not the case at all. My mother is the one bleeding and my wife has gone crazy.”
The 2009 U.S. Open champion told police when they arrived his wife tends to start arguments after he plays poorly. Glover had just shot a 78 that day in the third round at The Players Championship.
When the dispatcher asked to speak with Glover's wife, he declined.
“No you cannot. She’s in the house with my daughter. When the deputies get here, they need to talk to male, that would be me, because these other two are out of their heads at the moment," he said.
“She’s going to lie to you. That’s why I answered her phone. She’s telling lies and none of it is the truth.”
Glover, who had lacerations on his right arm, initially told officers he was willing to provide a sworn affidavit to pursue charges. But after his wife was forced into the patrol car, he attempted to claim that his injuries were not the result of the alleged altercation.
"On May 12, my wife and mother were involved in an argument to which the police were called," he said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. "Everyone is fine. Regrettably, although Krista was charged, we are comfortable that the judicial system is able to address what actually happened and Krista will be cleared in this private matter. We thank you for respecting our privacy as we work through this unfortunate situation."
Krista Glover was released later Saturday night on a $2,500 bond and pleaded not guilty in her first court appearance Tuesday. She is scheduled to return to court May 31.
