MOON TWP. — Police responding to a smoke-filled room at a Moon Township motel said they might have uncovered an illegal drug manufacturing operation, township Police Chief Greg Seamon said.

Officers were called at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to the Super 8 Motel on University Boulevard for a report of a “suspicious smokelike substance” coming from one of the rooms, Seamon said in a press release.

The motel manager told officers he went into the room and found that no one was inside. The fire alarm was going off, and the manager told officers he saw smoke but no fire, police said.

According to Seamon, the Moon Township Fire Department was called to investigate. Police said firefighters entered with protective equipment and verified that no one was inside.

Evidence found in the room indicated “someone may have been trying to manufacture some type of drug,” Seamon said.

The state police Clandestine Lab Response Team was called to help with the investigation.

Police said a suspect has been identified but no charges have been filed.
