Truck mows down five sitting on road divider in Uttar Pradesh

Victims were on their way to take a dip in Ganga when a tyre of their SUV got punctured and they were sitting on the road divider while the tyre was being changed.

Five people sitting on a road divider were killed and three others injured when they were hit by a truck in Jalaun on the Kanpur-Jhansi National Highway, police said on Wednesday.

The victims were on their way to Bithoor in Kanpur for a dip in the Ganga river when a tyre of their SUV got punctured and they sat on the divider while the tyre was being changed, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Amrendra Singh

In the meanwhile, a truck coming from Jhansi lost control while trying to save the SUV in the middle of the road and hit those sitting on the divider.

The deceased were identified as Kavita (8), Rahul (26), Rajni (30), Ram Baran (35) and Kailasha Devi (50), the SP said and added that the injured have been admitted to a hospital.

The truck driver fled the scene leaving his vehicle behind, the SP added.
