Mob attacks police station in Guntur

A tense situation was prevailing in Old Guntur after a a group of people attacked the Old Guntur Police Station on Tuesday night demanding action against a man whom they alleged had attempted to molest a 10-year-old girl.

Agitated locals pelted stones on the police station and a few glasspanes were broken. The police station, a model one, was inaugurated a year ago.

Police had to resort to a lathicharge to disperse the mob. A few private buses were damaged, and traffic on Ponnur Road was stopped. A few police personnel were also injured in the attack.

Superintendent of Police Guntur (Urban) Ch Vijaya Rao rushed to the police station and took control of the situation. Armed Reserve Police battalions were deployed in the area.

The accused was in the custody of the police when the girl’s relatives attacked the police station.
