MUMBAI: A 40-year-old labourer was killed in a fire which broke out in a
leather factory at Vasai early Wednesday morning.
According to eye witnesses, the smoke was billowing from the factory, manufacturing leather bags and shoes, at around 3 a.m.
The security guard informed the manager, who rushed to the factory and called the
fire brigade.
While the factory was shut, a labourer was inside the premises. He is believed to have died of suffocation.
Locals said that the fire was brought under control but it reoccurred from another spot and spread. The cause of the blaze has not been ascertained yet.
Leather materials were up in flames and the loss is estimated to be over a crore.
The body of the worker has been taken to the
primary health centre for autopsy.
