Indore: City’s power consumption cross 500 MW mark

Indore: For the first time in city’s history, the electricity consumption has crossed 500 MW mark. The unprecedented rise in power consumption is due to rise in temperatures. With the increase in temperature, the use of electrical appliances has increased manifold.

“The total daily consumption of power in the city has shot up to 502 MW,” said Akash Tripathi, managing director of MP West Zone Electricity Distribution Company Ltd.  In last two months, the demand for power has increased by 140 MW.

According to west discom, the electricity consumption in the city was 360 MW per day in March, which shot up to 420 MW in the second week of April and now it has crossed 500-MW mark.

The fans, water coolers, refrigerators, air-conditioners etc are being used in nearly 1.25 lakh households to beat the heat. Tripathi said that power is distributed from 11 transformers and 402 feeders in Indore. Besides, 106 grids facilitate distribution of power supply in the city.

Following the increased demand for power, a team of 80 engineers have been pressed for maintenance work so that supply is not disrupted. Tripathi has directed engineers to ensure that increased demand of electricity does not affect power supply. “There should be no interruption in electricity supply,” he said.

The sudden increase in electricity demand and soaring temperatures have prompted west discom to take measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the city.

Engineers have been directed to step up maintenance work. “The increase in internal and external temperatures of transformers requires maintenance. We are going to cool off transformers to reduce outside temperature by installing fans and coolers,” Tripathi said.
