Cape Town - Former Proteas batsman and coach Gary Kirsten has been appointed as Bangladesh's new team consultant it was announced on Tuesday.

President of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Nazmul Hassan confirmed that Kirsten's first order of business will be to find the national team a new head coach.

According to CricBuzz, Kirsten is expected to arrive in Bangladesh sometime between May 20 to May 22 to interview interested candidates.

Hassan said that the BCB are looking at three candidates shortlisted by the board, to determine who would be the perfect fit.

"Kirsten is working out with few probable (head coach) candidates and trying to find out a suitable one that would serve our purpose," Hasan told reporters, as quoted by CricBuzz.

"He is interviewing the players and coaching staff to know what kind of coach we need and also talking with us (about the development)."

Bangladesh have been without a full-time coach since the departure of Chandika Hathurusingha, who now coaches Sri Lanka.

Kirsten played in 101 Test matches and 185 ODIs for the Proteas between 1993 and 2004.

He also coached India to the 2011 Cricket World Cup title before he coached his own national side until 2013. 

Currently, Kirsten is in India as a batting consultant for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

He also coaches the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.
