Total electrification project well on track in Kozhikode

The total electrification project of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) in Kozhikode district is moving towards its target, after providing power connections to a majority of the applicants. Over the last two years, 83,173 new connections were given under various electrical sections and a majority of them were in rural areas.

Though hydroelectric power projects faced a setback in some rural areas due to public protest over environmental issues, the extension of the supply network faced no hindrance as MLAs too contributed to the purpose from their local development funds. About ₹13.5 crore was spent in the sector during the term.

KSEB officials said the Board laid 275.8-kilometres of new 11-kV lines in Kozhikode district to improve the supply. Priority was also given to the replacement of all damaged transformers with new ones. As per the KSEB figures, 555 new transformers were installed at various locations to address power supply issues and voltage fluctuations. This was in addition to the replacement of 192 old and damaged supply lines. Not less than any 1,41,241 metres were also replaced.

Four new sub stations

KSEB officials said the opening of four sub stations was one of the biggest achievements towards the total electrification project in Kozhikode district. The sub stations at Kinaloor, Nellikkode, Feroke and Perambra were realised on time besides increasing the capacity of other sub stations at Nallalam, Chevayur and Kuttiyadi.

The setting up of the State’s first 110-kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation along Gandhi Road too was an achievement for the district to streamline power supply. Though the State had 66-kV GIS sub stations, it was the first time that a 110-kV GIS station was considered for the city at a cost of ₹48.3 crore.

An engineer attached to the KSEB said the completion of the ongoing transgrid-2 project would strengthen the district’s distribution capacities. The 110-kV line linking the Kakkayam hydroelectrical plant with the Nallalam sub station would be the major component of the transgrid-2 project, he said.
