Parliament to introduce 'latte levy' and ban sale of bottled water in crackdown on single-use plastic

Parliament will introduce a “latte levy” and the sale of bottled water will be banned on the estate from this summer as part of a bid to drastically cut its consumption of single-use plastics by 2019.

A 25p coffee cup tax will be introduced on throwaway cups while non-recyclable disposable cups will be replaced with a compostable alternative.

Reusable coffee cups will be available to buy while incentives will be offered to customers who refill them.

Plastic bottles of mineral water will no longer be sold which authorities estimate will immediately remove 125,000 bottles from Parliament’s annual waste total.

Water dispensers will be made more widely available to counterbalance the bottle ban....
