100% electrification? Let there be light
After studying law I vectored towards journalism by accident and it's the only job I've done since. It's a job that has taken me on a private jet to Jaisalmer - where I wrote India's first feature on fractional ownership of business jets - to the badlands of west UP where India's sugar economy is inextricably now tied to politics. Image: Shutterstock On April 28, Leisang in Manipur became the last village in India to be connected to the power grid. With this, the government claimed to have ushered in 100 percent electrification. However, according to the National Rural Electrification Policy, a village is defined as ‘electrified’ if a transformer is connected to the grid and power lines are laid in all households, including a Dalit one. Here’s a look at some glaring statistics, as of April 30, if one has to go against the definition:
