Police believe speed contributed to fatal motorcycle crash in Bonython
The ACT's top traffic cop has launched an impassioned plea as the territory's road toll continues to mount, revealing police believe speed was a factor in the latest death.
There have been five fatal crashes on ACT roads so far in 2018, already surpassing last year's total of four.
The most recent death was that of motorcyclist Adrian Hogg, who died after a crash in Bonython about 7.30pm on Sunday.
Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said while the cause of the crash remained under investigation, it appeared the 47-year-old had crashed into a roundabout at the intersection of Anketell Street and Athllon Drive and come off his bike.
Station Sergeant Boorman said speed was believed to be a contributing factor, describing the growing road toll as "not acceptable and extremely frustrating".
"The messaging we continually give is obviously not being listened to," he said.
"People need to understand that out on the roads you need to be responsible, not only to look out for yourself but to look out for everyone else."
On a GoFundMe page asking for donations towards Mr Hogg's funeral, his brother Justin said the family still couldn't believe he was never coming home.
"Adrian was the guy everyone loved to see," Justin said.
"He made people laugh all the time. It could be World War III and Adrian would make you laugh.
"Adrian would do anything for a mate, or as he said, 'I don't have mates, I only have family'."
Justin said the family had been inundated with support after the death of Mr Hogg, who was a father, husband, son and uncle.
"Our mother will never be able to have a normal Mother's Day ever again because Adrian died on Mother's Day," he said.
"No parent should ever have to bury their child."
Four of the five deaths so far in 2018 have involved cyclists, pedestrians or motorcyclists.
"Vulnerable road users don’t have the same protection as someone driving a motor vehicle, and they need to be careful on the roads," Station Sergeant Boorman said.
"But again, I call for everybody out there to be safe, look out for everyone else and be responsible.
"Five fatalities this year is not acceptable and extremely frustrating. I don't know what more I can say."
