A Caledonia resident who thought they'd won a large sum of money and a new vehicle, police say, is out $4,000.

The Buchanan Drive resident told provincial police they had received multiple calls from a blocked number over several weeks saying they had won prize money.

On May 8, the person answered one of the calls and was told by an unidentified woman who claimed to be from the "Winner's Circle" that all they needed to do to claim their prize was transfer some money so the winnings and vehicle could be transported from the U.S. to Canada, according to the OPP.

Police say the victim transferred the money, but were told there were "paperwork issues" that could only be fixed by sending more money.

That's when the resident called police.

Neither the prize money nor the vehicle ever materialized.
