Seth Bearden's goal isn't to win just one state title. The Crowell freshman is aiming to win four.
Bearden claimed his first Class A state golf championship Tuesday at Lion's Municipal Golf Course in Austin after shooting a 2-over 73 in the second round, allowing him to leapfrog Blanket's Luke Kinkade into first place. Bearden finished with a two-round total of 145, while Kinkade, who held a one-stroke lead on Bearden heading into the second round, settled for silver by a mere stroke.
“I was going to let him have all the pressure today,” Bearden said. “I was just going out there trying to put a good score on the board. I hoped it would be enough and it was.”
Bearden credited his strong tournament to strong play on and around the green.
“I was putting it pretty good both days,” Bearden said. “I felt good around the greens. I had some very good par saves.”
But Bearden isn't satisfied now that he's grabbed his first state title.
“That's really always been my goal,” Bearden said. “I want to win every time I'm out there. I'm just going to keep working hard and do my best to get better.”
It wasn't a great day for Blanket's golf team as a hole. It also surrendered the team title lead. Garden City shot 336 in the second round – 34 strokes better than its first round – to pass Blanket and taken the Class A team title.
Seymour falls short of medal again
AUSTIN – The Seymour Panthers featured five seniors, who all had state golf experience. A few of them were even making their fourth appearance at state, but one thing had always eluded their annual trips to Austin – a medal.
The Panthers were determined to finish their careers on the medal stand, but found themselves just on the outside looking in for a third straight year, placing fourth as a team with a two-round total of 66-4.
Grapeland won the Class 2A team title at Roy Kizer Golf Club, shooting a total of 626. De Leon was 13 strokes back in second, while Vega placed third at 645.
The Panthers entered the day 10 strokes behind De Leon and Vega, which were tied for third, but couldn't lost ground despite being two shots better in the second round.
It's the second time in the past three year Seymour has finished fourth, just off the medal stand. The Panthers were also fourth in 2016 and fifth in 2017.
“When we set out this year all that we had on our mind was medaling at state,” Seymour coach John Anderson said. “We're a good team, but there were three teams that were better than us. Sometimes that's the way it goes. Life is hard sometimes.
“Not coming away with a medal today is very disappointing, but I'm not disappointed in the way we've worked and practiced all year. I know that's cliché with a lot of coaches, but these guys really were an example of hard work.”
Archer City's Wylie earns top 10 finish
AUSTIN - Archer City's Morgan Wylie had one of the lowest scores in the second round Tuesday at the Class 2A State Golf Tournament, shooting an even-par 71 at Roy Kizer Golf Course. It was good enough to move Wylie into a tie for eighth place, his best finish in three straight trips to the state tournament.
Wylie had a two-round total of 149, but was just three strokes out from earning a medal.
Grapeland's Rick Frauenberger shot 3 under both rounds and won with a 6-under 136. He was 10 stroke better than second place Trevor Roquemore of Douglass, who bested Roy Moya of Three Rivers in a playoff for the silver medal.
Raiders improve on final day
GEORGETOWN – The Rider Raiders couldn't move out of 12th place Tuesday, but still managed a stronger round during the second day of the Class 5A State Golf Tournament at White Wind Golf Club.
Rider shot a combined 326 – 19 strokes better than the first round – giving it as two-day total of 671.
"We finished the season off on a solid note," Rider coach Dakota Robbins said. "It was truly a remarkable year. Going to state has always been a dream for the guys as well as mine. This couldn't have happened to a better group of hard-working young men. It has been an honor to coach them."
Highland Park easily won the team title, shooting a 12-under 564 for the tournament. The Scots were 33 strokes better than Cedar Park and Frisco Centennial. Centennial bested Cedar Park in a playoff for second place.
Highland Park had the top two medalists in the tournament. Trip Carter shot 10 under for the tournament to claim gold, while teammate Turner Hosch was second with a 3-under 141.
Junior Lane Garcia and senior Clark Dunkelberg provided the top scores for Rider, shooting identical 162s. Bryce Gunkel was six strokes better Tuesday, posting an 80 for a two-day total of 176, which was the same mark as teammate Collin Page. Robert Borgman shot 184.

Key tied for 21st in his third and final state title appearance. Austyn Reily of Pottsboro won the tournament with a 137, while Midwestern State commit Garrett Leak of Brock was second at 144.
Pottsboro also won the team gold medal with a total of 621, besting second-place Troup by nine shots.
