BS Yeddyurappa, the president of the BJP's Karnataka unit and its chief ministerial candidate, romped home to a comfortable win in Shikaripura, even as counting trends pointed to a saffron surge in the Congress's southern bastion.
The Election Commission declared the result of the election in Shikaripur early on Tuesday afternoon, saying Yeddyurappa won 86,983 votes.

Congress candidate Goni Malatesha finished second, with just 51,586 votes. The margin of defeat was a staggering: 35,397 votes.
HT Balegar, the Janata Dal (Secular) party's candidate, managed 13,191 votes.
