Three City/County tennis teams are still alive in their quests for postseason honors, and Wilson Memorial's boys team is leading the pack.
The Green Hornets turned in an impressive effort Tuesday in their Shenandoah District team tournament final against Stuarts Draft, sweeping all five singles matches to post a 5-0 victory.
Wilson will host Central-Woodstock, runner-up in the Bull Run District, in the VHSL Class 2 Region B semifinals on Friday. The Cougars will travel to George Mason on Thursday to take on the Mustangs, who beat the Falcons 5-0 in the Bull Run final on Monday.
Wilson's girls fell short in their quest for a district team title, losing to top-seeded East Rockingham 5-2. The Green Hornets will be at George Mason on Thursday, while the Eagles will host Central-Woodstock.
The Green Hornets got the clinching team point in dramatic fashion, courtesy of Ryan Aud at first singles. After losing the opening set to district singles champ Matthew Gordon in a tiebreaker, the senior roared back to take the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1 to wrap up the team title.
Both Aud and Gordon will play in the region singles semifinal on Tuesday at Wilson.
Ryan Hearl and Ben Knick got the Green Hornets rolling against the Cougars. Hearl got Wilson on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tanner Wright at sixth singles and Knick followed at second singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Martin Leon.
Next in was Leyton Pullin, who chalked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ryan Riley at fifth singles, while Alex Knick got the Hornets' fourth point at third singles with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over Alex Gordon.
East Rock's girls came out of the singles part of their match leading Wilson 4-2. The two winners for the Hornets were Abby Aleshevich at second singles and Emma Flora at fourth singles.
The Eagles clinched the title with a win at first doubles.
