New gun regulations in Columbus will ban imitation firearms and bump stocks and allow the city to shut down businesses that attract violence.
The Columbus City Council on Monday, May 14, approved with a 6-0 vote four ordinances city officials say will help reduce gun violence. Councilman Emmanuel Remy was absent from the meeting.
The ordinances would bring about a total of 11 changes that city Attorney Zach Klein has said the city can make despite a state pre-emption law that limits local governments’ authorities to regulate guns.
“This is a good step,” Council President Shannon G. Hardin said. “The truth is, though, there’s only so much we can do under state statute.”
