To be in the armed forces is a badge of honour for any Indian. While many go for it and become esteemed officers, some still inspire to be one. Kshitij Mishra was one aspirant who couldn't complete his dream but chose to lose all that extra weight with an army man's discipline. Savouring his favourites like
motichoor laddoos and jalebis did not hurt his
weight loss because of the strict regime he followed. Here's how Kshitij shed such massive mass from his body...

Duration it took me to lose weight: 3 years
The turning point: In my final year of graduation, I realised I needed to lose weight due to the pain I felt in my leg, chest, and head.
Breakfast: A glass of milk with corn flakes, almonds and a banana OR oats with one boiled egg
Lunch: A bowl of dal, subzi, curd, one roti and salad
Dinner: A bowl of dal, subzi and salad
Before bedtime: Half glass of milk
I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): I try to avoid cheat meals but whenever I give in, it’s only for indian sweets- a piece of motichoor ke laddoo or fafda
jalebi. However, I make sure that I don’t indulge in my cheat meals after 6 pm.
My workout: I love
running. I prefer alternate days of cardio and weight lifting which is very important to tone yourself.
Low-calorie recipes I swear by: No recipe as such but I like having fruits in place of cooking anything as such.
Fitness secrets I unveiled: There’s no secret to hard work. If you want to change things, discipline is the key to get it.
How do I stay motivated?
I always wanted to join the armed forces but unfortunately, couldn’t. Focus really does matter if you wish to achieve a particular goal. Although I couldn’t earn the olive green uniform, my journey has inculcated the discipline and dedication in me.
How do you ensure you don’t lose focus?
My dream to join the armed forces remained unfulfilled but it helped me stay motivated and that’s how I managed to lose 42 kilos. Also, I keep asking myself if I want to go back to size 48.
What’s the most difficult part of being overweight?
You don’t get to choose the clothes you like.
What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line?
I would want an athletic body. I want to see myself as lean and strong.
What are the lifestyle changes you made?
You are what you eat. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I start my day early, around 5.30 am with a lukewarm glass of lime and honey water. This is followed by breakfast within 90 minutes of getting up. Eat every two to three hours. I have 2 litres of water approximately every day. I also have dinner before 8 so that I don’t go to bed bloated.
What was the lowest point for you?
It is embarrassing to go in any public transport such as bus or auto because of your weight.
Lessons learnt from weight loss: Your life is precious. You have to remember that while food keeps us alive, we have to have it in the right portions to ensure it doesn’t work against us.
