E.C. Glass boys lacrosse team wrapped a perfect regular season for the first time in school history Tuesday night, waxing Douglas Freeman 12-3 at Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday to improve to 14-0.
The Hilltoppers are the No. 1 seed for the upcoming National Conference tournament and will host a first-round game against either Rockbridge or William Byrd at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Josiah Martin and Lucas Dendy led Glass with three goals apiece Tuesday, while Wyatt Hamilton and Owen Ahrens each added two goals.
Glass, the Class 4 runner-up last spring, has already defeated both Rockbridge and Byrd this season.
On the girls side, Rockbridge defeated Glass 13-11 in the Hilltoppers’ regular-season finale.
VES 11, Norfolk Collegiate 1
Virginia Episcopal took a step toward earning its third straight state title with a blowout win over Norfolk Collegiate in the VISAA Div. II state quarterfinals.
The game was delayed because of inclement weather several times in the first half before Norfolk Collegiate (7-9) conceded at halftime. VISAA officials consented to that request.
VES (8-6) was led by James Hill, who scored four goals and added three assists. Aaron Staggers finished with two goals and seven other Bishops got in on the scoring, too.
Second-seeded VES now plays in the state semifinal at Randolph-Macon College on Friday against either No. 3 Hampton Roads Academy or No. 6 Highland School. Time for that game has not yet been set.
SOFTBALL
Nelson County 5, William Campbell 3
Madi Martin’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth broke a 2-2 tie as Nelson went on to defeat visiting the Generals in the Dogwood District quarterfinals Tuesday.
Martin went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs on the day and was the only Governors hitter with more than one hit.
Staci Taylor earned the win, allowing four hits and two unearned runs in seven innings.
Nelson scored twice in the first inning, highlighted by Abby Foley’s RBI single and made the 2-0 lead hold up until the top of the sixth, when Campbell sophomore Kasey Crews blasted a game-tying two-run homer that scored Kaylin Brightwell.
But Martin countered with a homer to center. Nelson improved to 12-5 overall, while Campbell fell to 1-17. Both teams are headed to region play, Nelson in Region 2C and the Generals in 1B.
FOOTBALL
Appomattox secures state rings
For the third straight year, the Raiders received state football rings during a ceremony in Appomattox County High’s auditorium Tuesday evening.
It also was the third year the Appomattox community helped purchase those rings. This year, roughly one-third of the money to purchase rings came from bingo events in Appomattox. Players also sold raffle tickets, performed work at Courtland Festival Park and relied on businesses and churches for donations, coach Doug Smith said.
“It’s always good to have something you’re working on together,” said Smith, who has kept his team busy helping out around the community the last few years.
The Raiders won the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Virginia High School League Class 2 state championships.
At the ceremony, the team also surprised longtime PA announcer Samuel Carter, also a member of the Appomattox Board of Supervisors, with three state rings for his service in the PA role.
Carter has vacated his volunteer post after serving as PA announcer for 40 years.

Covenant 5, VES 1
The lone win for the Bishops came from Xander Dirom at No. 6 singles. Dirom amassed a 15-0 singles record in 2018, but the season came to a close for VES (11-4) in the VISAA Division II quarterfinals.
In the VISAA Division II girls soccer first round, Covenant defeated VES 3-0.
