Tag expected to help attract more international tourists

Kappad beach, a historically important destination in the State, has been shortlisted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) for the prestigious Blue Flag title. The certification will mainly attest to water quality standards, committed environmental management initiatives and safety arrangements for beach-goers.

Kappad is the only beach that was selected from the State to be considered for the tag. Tourism Department officials say a beach management committee has been formed to have a look at the immediate requirements for winning the title and completing them on time. Representatives of various government departments, including Fisheries and Revenue, have already visited the site to plan the project implementation.

Tourism Department officials say the Blue Flag title will be an added advantage for the beach to attract more international tourists.

An exclusive waste management facility, flawless security arrangements, first aid services and comfort station facilities are some of the basic prerequisites to be arranged to secure the certification. Also, there should be separate arrangement for environmental education and information for the visitors to make them aware of the coastal zone ecosystems and sensitive areas.
