In 2006 Mark Inglis from New Zealand was the only double amputee to summit Qomolangma. He scaled the peak from the China’s Tibet side.
Gyanendra Shrestha, an official at the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation stated that the Chinese double amputee scaled the summit at 8:40 am local time and he is the first double amputee to climb the peak from the south face.
After eight rope-fixing team members reached the summit Xia’s successful summit happened which made climbing route open for all other climbers for 2018 spring season.
The climbing permit was received by the double amputee from the Nepali government.The country’s supreme court allowed double amputee and visually impaired persons from climbing any mountains above 6,500 meters in March.
A Nepal-based Imagine Treks and Expeditions company has managed Xia’s expedition.This was the Chinese climber’s fifth attempt to scale the 8,848-meter world’s highest peak.
In 1975 he had lost both his legs during his first attempt to reach the summit due to frostbite.
In 2014, 2015 and 2016 Xia had attempted for the summit but his dreams were shattered due to avalanche, earthquake and bad weather respectively.
346 mountaineers from 38 Nepali and foreign teams have taken the permits for expedition this year according to the Nepal’s tourism department which is the official government body which issues climbing permits for the Qomolangma expedition.
