Fox is still in search of another Empire-sized hit, and it's shaking up its schedule to try to make one. The network scrapped five shows this season (two dramas and three comedies) and picked up an eccentric batch of new series.

The most interesting of Fox's pickups, for better or worse, is the decision to revive the former ABC comedy Last Man Standing. The conservative-leaning Tim Allen show ran on ABC for six seasons before being canceled last year, a decision which sparked accusations that the network gave it the ax due to the show's politics. (ABC maintained the cancellation was purely due to scheduling and licensing issues.) Now, Fox is bringing back Last Man and putting it in its old time slot at 8/7c on Fridays. It will be followed by the new comedy The Cool Kids, which stars David Alan Grier, Martin Mull, Leslie Jordan and Vicki Lawrence as a group of friends living in a retirement community.

This means that Fox's Tuesday night comedy block is dead, at least for now. With New Girlending after this season and the cancellations of The Mick and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the latter of which was saved by NBC, Tuesdays belong purely to dramas The Gifted and Lethal Weapon this fall. There is one other new comedy that will join Fox's current (animation domination) Sunday night comedy block: Rel, a multi-cam series starring Rel Howrey as a man who must rebuild his live as a single man after learning of his wife's affair.

Other new additions to the lineup include high concept drama The Passage, which stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, and Proven Innocent, a new legal drama from Empire's Danny Strong. Both new series will debut midseason.

In addition to The Passage and Proven Innocent, Fox is also holding until midseason new episodes of The Orville and the final season of Gotham. The network will debut its live production of Rent on Sunday, Jan. 27 (7/6c) and a new season of Cosmos in the spring.
