Three people were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries after a chain-reaction accident Monday afternoon.
According to a media release from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, at 3:58 p.m. units from the sheriff’s office, Fairfax Fire Department, and Area Ambulance were dispatched to a multivehicle accident that had happened a short while before the call on Highway 151 at its intersection with Beverly Road.
As deputies arrived on scene, they discovered four vehicles had been struck in connection with the accident. Police say that preliminary investigation showed that a line of cars had stopped in the northbound lane at the intersection waiting for the lead vehicle to make a turn. Then, a vehicle also heading north failed to stop in time, and it collided with the rear vehicle in the line. This started a chain reaction, pushing the car in the back into the vehicle in front of it, knocking that vehicle into the vehicle in front of it, and, so on, until four vehicles had been struck in total.
The occupant of the vehicle who failed to stop was described as a 17-year-old juvenile who was the only occupant of her vehicle, according to the release. She was transported by Area Ambulance to Mercy Hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
The second vehicle struck was driven by Chatandra Williams of Cedar Rapids. Williams was also transferred to the hospital for treatment, according to the release.
The third vehicle was driven by Malisa Gongloe of Cedar Rapids, according to the release. Amos Topka, a passenger in Gongloe’s vehicle, was also taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The final vehicle was driven by Jacob Glade. Glade was not injured in the accident.
The accident remains under investigation.
