Banners hang at South Lakes High School for each sport, and every one proclaims the district, regional and state championships won by that team. The softball banner is blank.

The No. 7 Seahawks start the postseason this week, and they have plans for a deep playoff run to fill that empty space.

South Lakes (17-3) will host Langley (9-11) in a Liberty District semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Seahawks were bounced by the Saxons in the first round of the 2017 postseason, but they have avoided the same fate this year: As the top seed in the district, they hold an automatic berth to the Region 6D tournament starting May 23.

Still, while this district tournament will not serve as a direct steppingstone to the regional and state tournaments, the trophy at the end still matters to South Lakes.

“Our players see the banners every day, so this district tournament means something to them,” South Lakes Coach Carlos Soto said. “We’re not looking past this.”

The Seahawks entered the season with just two returning starters, pitcher Aly Rayle and second baseman Kaylin Tang. The two seniors are both three-year starters; Rayle also started a few games as a freshman when then-starting pitcher, her sister Tess Rayle, needed a day off.

The leadership of Rayle and Tang, as well as senior Emma Hodge, who has been hampered by injuries, has kept the team on task throughout the season.

“When you get to this point in the season, when you’ve had, like, 80 practices, and they have final exams and projects and a million other things to think about, you worry about keeping them focused,” Soto said. “Not this group. They’re always ready, always prepared.”

With a win against Yorktown last Tuesday, the Seahawks ended the regular season 10-0 in Liberty District play, including two wins against Langley and two wins against No. 2 seed McLean.

“We know the Liberty District, and we know as much as we have improved this season, they all — Langley, Yorktown, McLean — have improved just as much,” Soto said. “We’re not going to take any team lightly.”
