Brent crude oil hit a new 3½ year high on Monday despite resistance emerging in Europe and Asia to U.S. sanctions against major crude exporter Iran and rising U.S. drilling pointing to higher North American production.
Brent crude was up 85 cents, or 1.1 percent, at $77.97 a barrel by 11:22 a.m. ET (1522 GMT). The contract hit $78.22 earlier in the session, its highest level since Nov. 26, 2014.
U.S. light crude oil was up 28 cents at $70.98, remaining below last week's 3½-year high of $71.89 a barrel.
Crude futures hit the highs as the markets anticipated a sharp fall in Iranian crude supply once U.S. sanctions bite later this year.
