Former Vice President Joe Biden has lent his name to Nancy Soderberg's bid for Congress.
“I’ve known Nancy for three decades since she first started her work in the Senate," Biden said in a prepared statement provided by the campaign Monday. "She is a lifelong public servant who has served at the highest levels of government. At the White House and as an ambassador to the United Nations, Nancy brokered international peace deals, and helped develop and promote U.S. national security policy. She understands what it’s like to bring both sides to the table and solve complex issues. She’s been tested and she’s delivered."
Soderberg is in a Democratic primary for Florida's 6th District seat representing Volusia and Flagler counites. She is challenged by Stephen Sevigny and John Upchurch. Three Republicans — Fred Costello, Michael Waltz and John Ward — are also in the race to replace Ron DeSantis, who's running for governor.
Biden, 75, served as vice president in President Barack Obama's administration. Prior to that, he served as a Democratic senator from Delaware for 36 years.
"I’m supporting Nancy because she’s a problem solver and will fight for the values of the 6th District: growing the middle class, creating jobs you can raise a family on, ensuring every family has access to affordable health care and every child can get an affordable education," Biden said. "She has the knowledge and experience to make a difference and get things done for the people of the 6th District. We have the power to bring change to Washington in 2018, and it starts with electing Nancy Soderberg to Congress."
Soderberg also landed an endorsement last week from NARAL, a pro-choice political advocacy organization.
Soderberg, who served as a high-ranking strategist in the National Security Council during President Bill Clinton's administration, is now a University of North Florida professor who lives in Crescent Beach. She said she is honored by Biden's endorsement.
"I’ve known Joe for years, and his leadership and dedication to our country has inspired not only myself, but millions of others," she said. "I'm thrilled to have him on my team in this election and will work every day to continue fighting for the families in the Florida 6th.”
